SCIENCE DAY!!!! We had so much fun investigating paper flowers and making our own rainbow appear before our eyes.
First, we found out what happened when you put a folded paper flower in water
we could see it start to unfold
petal by petal it opened up
until it became a lovely flower :)
We then decided to plan an investigation to answer the question....
Does the shape of the flower affect how quickly it opens?
we coloured in our flowers
cut the flowers out and folded the petals in
then we put them in one at a time a time
we used a stop watch to record how long it took each one to open up
we also created our own rainbows :)
What do plants need to stay healthy? - Results
We were able to see the different effects each variable had on the seeds we planted.
Pot 1 had everything - it was healthy with lovely green leaves
Pot 2 had no water and didn't even begin to germinate
Pot 3 had no soil - we noticed that it germinated, but growth was very limited
Pot 4 had not light - we were amazed at how long it had grown as it was searching for sun
Pot 5 had no warmth - It had germinated but didn't look healthy
Plant Growth - we used our working scientifically observation skills to look at the different stages of plant growth, from a seed into a healthy plant.
Today we enjoyed looking at the features of non-chronological reports!
What's inside a seed?
Plants - we have started our new science topic about plants. We each planted our own seeds and set up our own investigation to answer the question - What do plants need to stay healthy?

Music - The Safari Call - This week we learnt a traditional African call and response song ‘Che Che Kule’
Science - Hygiene investigation. Miss Koza put 'germs' on our hands, we then investigated whether paper towels, cold water, or warm water with soap would be the most effective way of getting most of the germs off our hands
Fantastic Fred Experience. We really enjoyed learning all about how to keep our bodies and minds healthy.
we learnt it's important to eat a healthy balanced diet
And to make sure we get plenty of rest and what we need to do to get a good nights sleep
Also, the need for plenty of exercise
and to limit our time on devices
Music - Rhythmic Safari
Computing - Creating media - This we we listened to 'Neptune' and drew shapes and patterns. We then used shaped and patterns to create sounds using chrome music lab.
Shared Reading - We were really excited to start our new class book 'How to Hide a Lion'.
Computing - Creating Media - Making music. This week we worked with our partners to create a rhythm with a steady beat using musical instruments. We then used Chrome Music Studio to create a similar piece of music using a computer programme. We then compared the two methods for creating music and discovered Chrome Music had a lot more instruments!!
Music - African call and response - This week we used untuned percussion instruments to create a piece of music that we felt represented our chosen African animal. We showed brilliant teamwork!
Representing African animals using untuned percussion instruments
We are learning to write fact files in English and we did some amazing research about African animals!
In maths this week we have been looking at the properties of 3D shapes and finding lines of symmetry in 2D shapes and out in the playground!
Some of us applied our knowledge of properties of 3D shapes to solve reasoning problemss
Some of us grouped 3D shapes according to their properties using Venn diagrams
Look at some of the lines of symmetry we found around the playground
We then applied our knowledge on line of symmetry by creating our own symmetrical patterns
Computing - Creating Media. This term we are going to use information technology to create our own piece of music. This week, we learnt how different pieces of music can make us feel different emotions and how they might be used for different purposes.
World Book Day!! Book Swap. Some of us took part in the Datchet St Mary's Book Swap :)
World Book Day!! Look at these clues. What do you think our class book was?
World Book Day!! Six Word Story Slam. We created our own stories using only 6 words. We found it very challenging getting the number of words exactly right!
World Book Day!! We had a go at editing a short story.
World Book Day!!
World Book Day!! Look at our amazing costumes
The children enjoyed practising their observation and sketching skills in art by drawing the second half of a Great Fire of London painting.
Today we made bread to finish our Great Fire of London project.
The children loved having a go on the equipment in gymnastics!
The children were set the task of working as a team to create a Dream Bird. Look at the wonderful creations they came up with!
More money - building on our new money knowledge, We had lots of fun making amounts
Adding 'er' and 'est' to adjectives
Money, Money, Money! - in our first money lesson, we practiced counting in pounds and pence.
We used number lines to help us add amounts
We used our money mat to help us
We used number squares to help us add amounts together
Great use of your number mat Zac
The Great Fire of London - Putting out the fire. We experienced for ourselves just how difficult it was carrying buckets of water and imagined what it must have been like trying to put out a big fire with just buckets of water.
This week in computing we designed our own mat for our floor robots then programmed them
Algorithms - There was something wrong with the instructions we gave this floor robot!
Algorithms - Our instructions worked well to get our floor robot from its starting position to the pond on our mat
Algorithms - Finn came up with an even quicker way to get the floor robot to the pond!
Nativity - What an amazing job KS1 did performing their much anticipated Christmas Nativity. We couldn't be prouder of them all. Here are some photos of year 2 doing the dress rehearsal where we performed for the rest of the school.
We enjoyed learning how to build a fire. We watched a video from woodland classrooms then went out to the forest school area and had a go ourselves! We all had a go at preparing the tinder and adding sticks to the fire. This was all part of our Great Fire of London topic and we will use this new knowledge to help write a set of instructions.
Shared Reading - This week we finished our shared reading book 'The Tear Thief'. We have absolutely loved reading this book and were really sad it came to an end. We have had such good discussions and learnt lots of new vocabulary from this book which we are trying to include in our own writing.
More algorithms. This week in computing we wrote our own algorithms and programmed them into our floor bots. We predicted where we thought they would travel to and marked on our maps where they actually stopped
Telling the time. We made our own clocks and used them to help us tell the time.
Butterfly life cycles. We had so much fun making models of the lifecycle of a butterfly.
In computing this half term, we are learning all about algorithms. To start us off, we took it in turns pretending to be robots, where our partners had to give us very detailed instructions to carry out tasks such as moving around the classroom and drawing pictures. It was great fun, especially as the robots weren't allowed to talk!
These 2 drawings had the same instructions, but one set of instructions was more detailed
Myths and Legends. In music we started off our topic for this half term by watching the story of George and the Dragon, then retelling it by clapping out a rhythm to go with the words.
In maths, we created our own word problems to help us when it comes to answering them. Can you solve any?
The children really enjoyed our Florence Nightingale Day!
Christmas fair!! - We had so much fun. What lovely creations all our talented pupils made to sell!

An angel visiting Mary
An angel whispering the news about baby Jesus to Joseph
The wise men followed the star to where Jesus lay
The wise men then presented their gifts to baby Jesus
We learnt how candy canes represent a J for Jesus
And also represent love if we join them together
Using a dictionary - During our shared reading lessons, we are picking up new vocabulary to go on our magpie wall. Sometimes we don't know what a word means, so we learnt how to look these unfamiliar words up in a dictionary to find out their meaning
Maths - Position and direction. We went out into the playground and created our own grid of squares. We then used our new knowledge of grid references to explain a persons position on the grid. Remember "along the corridor and up the stairs"
Digital photography: In computing this term we are learning about digital photography. We took some pictures with our iPads. We focussed on objects up close, things in the distance, the difference between portrait and landscape and of course a few selfies :) But we also learnt how important is was to ask the person's permission before we take any photos.
Comprehension - We are doing so well with our comprehension skills. We are able to retrieve information from whatever text we're reading by underlining key information.
Researching Habitats - Following on from our work on minibeasts and microhabitats, we have carried out our own research on different habitats from around the world. We used books, media and the internet to carry out our research then recorded our findings.
Music - this term our theme in music is space. This week we imagined we discovered a brand new planet and told the story of this discovery through sound
Music - soundscape to space
Bug Hotel!! We put all our knowledge about minibeasts and microhabitats into practice by working together to create a bug hotel. We still need to add the finishing touches but we have made a great start and we think it is a fantastic way at gaining real life experiences.
Here's our equipment before we started
Here we are in our groups with our empty pallets
Here is bug hotel so far
