Patterns
The children had fun creating patterns using shapes and colour.
This week we learnt the names of some 3D shapes; cylinder, cube, sphere, pyramid and cuboid. The children explored these shapes by building with them and making them using playdough. They also investigated which shapes were good at sliding, rolling and stacking.
For 3 weeks we have been focussing on the numbers 9 and 10. We started by recongising the numerals and counting quantities to 10. We moved onto conceptual subitising which is the ability to see a whole quantity by using small groups eg " i can see 5 and 4... 5 and 4 makes 9". We have continued to use the "stair case method" in helping to remember one more and one less from a given number. We then moved onto the composition of 10- which leads onto the number bonds to 10. The children have been using many manipulatives to compose number bonds to 10 eg 10 frames, rekenreks and numicon.
Mass and Capacity
This week the children explored mass by using balance scales. They enjoyed using playdough and making 'cupcakes' and put them on the scale to see who had the heavier/lighter cupcakes. The children also used cubes and objects around the classroom and tried to balance the scale eg.. 6 cubes is the same mass as scissors.
We also explored capacity using water and jugs of many sizes as well as containers and conkers. The children predicted which jug/container had the most capacity.
Junk Modelling
The children have had a great fun creating space crafts. It started with a rocket for baby bear and then we received some even bigger boxers to create the ISS as well as a satellite.
We are back doing our weekly balance ability sessions. The children have been very resilient and some children are now using pedal bikes!!

The Season of Autumn
Map it out
One of our topics this term has been maps and focussing in on our local area. We started off by talking about the universe and the children drew some unique interpretations of what they think the universe looks like using pastels. We then focussed in on the country we live in and more specifically our local area, Datchet. The children drew a map of where they live and explained how they could get from school to their house. Next, we spoke about our families and who lived with us. The children drew who lived with them and spoke about what their house looks like.
